Resumen : Congo red and gastrointestinal traffic en zebrafish larvae This paper describes the use of Congo red to visualize the gastrointestinal tract flow, a physiological result of peristaltic contractions in larvae of zebrafish Danio rerio. The method consisted in submerging a larval population of 5 dpf in different concentrations; 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 mg / ml of the dye and making direct, non-invasive observations at 0, 6, 16, 22, 28 and 30 h. Congo Red was found to be lethal only at concentrations above 0.3 mg / ml, therefore, being considered as the Maximum Non-Lethal Concentration. Time duration of the filling of the intestinal bulb was estimated to be between 6 and 16 h and the duration of the emptying and expulsion of the intestinal content between 22 and 28 h. The results showed that Congo Red, a peptide-binding dye that emits intense orange fluorescence light when stimulated through fluorescein filters, describes easy-to-follow kinetics throughout the gastrointestinal tract, which could be used to evaluate The physiology of intestinal motility during different experimental conditions; Such as under genetic manipulation, drug treatment or exposure to environmental factors, contributing to facilitate rapid analysis of the function of the digestive organ in live larvae of zebrafish.
